Skill has done a series of radio programs about the different islands, including Rainsford and Georges islands, that have been airing this week. The master of ceremonies will be David Skill of WATD 95.9 FM. The Friends of Flying Santa carries on this New England tradition of providing holiday gifts and other supplies to isolated lighthouse families. In 1936, Snow started helping the Flying Santa program, begun some years earlier, and he continued until the late 1970s. Flying Santa will arrive by helicopter about 1:15 p.m. Snow wrote a column for The Patriot Ledger for many years and hundreds of residents took his guided tours of the harbor islands.Īlthough he died in 1982, he is remembered still as a singular personality who worked tirelessly to preserve Georges Island’s Civil War-era Fort Warren.įriends of Snow and Bicknell will speak and share memories beginning at noon. and will honor the many different contributions of the local historian, newspaper columnist and radio personality.
